Tyler Yacht Club is approved by the American Sailing Association to provide a professional level of sailing instruction. Our courses are structured for beginning through experienced sailors and provide documented certification at various levels which is recognized worldwide.

 Courses and Certifications 

Basic Keelboat Sailing Certification
Prerequisites: None
Description: This is a weekend course providing the theory and skills required to sail a boat of about 20 feet in length in light to moderate wind and sea conditions in familiar waters without supervision. This is a preparatory standard with no auxiliary power or navigation skill required and is prerequisite to all upper level certification.

Basic Small Boat Certification
Prerequisites: None
Description: This course is oriented toward dingy sailing. It is a two day course that covers the fundamentals of sailing and boat handling as well as rules of the road along with safety and seamanship. It is an excellent beginning course for junior sailors.

Coastal Navigation Certification
Prerequisites: None
Description: This is a non-sailing course that teaches the navigational theory required to safely navigate a vessel in coastal or inland waters. You will learn to use Federal Navigation Publications such as tides and current tables, how to convert bearings between true, magnetic and compass, plot chart positions, determine course to steer to arrive at your intended destination, how to recognize and use lighted and unlit aides to navigation.

Basic Coastal Cruising Certification
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Certification
Description: This course enables successful candidates to cruise safely in local and regional waters as both skipper and crew aboard auxiliary powered sailboats of about 20 to 30 feet in length, in moderate wind and sea conditions.

Bareboat Charter Certification
Prerequisites: Basic Coastal Cruising Certification
Description: This is an intermediate cruising standard for individuals with cruising experience. The successful candidates will be able to act as skipper or crew of a 30 to 50 foot vessel sailing by day in coastal waters. The course includes knowledge of boat systems and maintenance procedures.

Basic Coastal and Bareboat Combination
Prerequisites: Basic Keelboat Certification
Description: This is a 3 day course covering all of the material contained in the Basic Coastal Cruising and Bareboat Charter curriculum. This is a live aboard course.

Advanced Coastal Cruising
Prerequisites: Bareboat Chartering and Coastal Navigation
Description: This course provides the successful candidate with the skill required to safely act as skipper or crew aboard a 30 to 50 foot vessel in coastal or inland waters, day or night, in any weather.
